2 Houston-area deputies and gunman wounded in shootout

HOUSTON (AP) — Two Harris County constable deputies have been wounded in a shootout that authorities say also left the gunman wounded and two other deputies injured.

Constable Mark Herman said one of the deputies shot with a shotgun was hospitalized in stable condition. The other received treatment for a shotgun pellet wound to his head.

Herman said two deputies suffered cuts and scrapes as they dove for cover.

Sheriff’s spokesman Thomas Gilliland said the deputies had responded to a phone call early Tuesday from a man who sounded suicidal. He emerged from a home with a shotgun. Gilliland said it’s unclear who shot first.

Gilliland said shots fired by all four deputies hit the unidentified gunman. He was in serious condition and facing four counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.
