Acting fire chief leads Waxahachie unit after sex assault charges

WAXAHACHIE, Texas (AP) — A North Texas volunteer fire chief will lead a neighboring department where some firefighters are charged in the alleged sexual assault of a recruit.

Forreston Volunteer Fire Department Chief Wes Curry on Monday night was named interim chief for the Emergency Services District No. 6 Volunteer Fire Department at Waxahachie.

The Ellis County Volunteer Fire Department board appointed Curry for 90 days amid the investigation. Curry replaces Chief Gavin Satterfield, who was suspended last week after being charged with witness tampering.

Five firefighters are off the job after being charged with aggravated sexual assault in what prosecutors say was an apparent rite of initiation Jan. 20 at a station. An assistant fire chief was also removed after being charged with witness tampering for allegedly discouraging reporting of the incident.
