Angels’ Josh Hamilton files for divorce from wife

DALLAS (AP) — Angels’ slugger Josh Hamilton is in the process of getting divorced from his wife Katie, according to court documents filed in North Texas.

The divorce petition was filed in February in Tarrant County, where Hamilton played five seasons with the Texas Rangers, the Dallas Morning News reported (http://bit.ly/1beOnj7).

The petition doesn’t detail the couple’s problems, but it cites conflict between them as a reason for the divorce. Hamilton has a long history of substance abuse problems and earlier this year he self-reported a relapse.

Hamilton outlined 34 requests in the petition. Among the requests: prohibiting his wife from using a Maserati and 1972 Chevrolet Blazer in his possession; prohibiting her from “hiding” the children from him; prohibiting her from making disparaging remarks against him or his family.

In March, Katie Hamilton submitted in court a general denial to her husband’s petition.

This month, the couple agreed not to communicate with each other as the case proceeds.

Hamilton can’t see his children without supervision, according to court records. He is also prohibited from going to the couple’s properties in Westlake, Texas; Newport Coast, California; and Valley Mills, Texas.

The $16.5-million home in Newport Coast went up for sale on Friday.

Hamilton hasn’t been with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim since right shoulder surgery before spring training, and his self-reported relapse.

Angels’ owner Arte Moreno has said that Hamilton might not play for Los Angeles again. Hamilton is owed $83 million over the final three seasons of a $125 million, five-year deal the 2010 AL MVP signed in 2012.

Hamilton is not being disciplined by Major League Baseball for his relapse.
