HOUSTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden will visit the Port of Houston next week to encourage economic development and capitalize on planned expansion of the Panama Canal.

The White House on Wednesday announced Biden will be in Houston next Monday. Biden’s stop at the Port of Houston comes a day before he’ll tour the Panama Canal expansion project.

Biden in September toured the ports of Baltimore; Charleston, S.C.; and Savannah, Ga. He’s been noting improvements meant to accommodate larger ships that will be able to pass through the Panama Canal starting in 2015.

The Obama administration sees such infrastructure projects as key to U.S. job creation.
