Civil rights lawsuit filed against indicted ex-cop and city of Mesquite

DALLAS (AP) — A federal civil rights lawsuit has been filed against an indicted former police officer in a Dallas suburb in the shooting of a black man who was mistaken for a thief while trying to unlock his own truck.

The lawsuit filed Thursday names both the former officer, Derick Wiley, and the city of Mesquite.

Wiley, who is black, was fired for use-of-force violations after the November shooting of Lyndo Jones, who was injured. A grand jury indicted Wiley in December on an aggravated assault charge in the shooting.

The lawsuit filed by Jones says he seeks “answers and compensation.” The lawsuit says Jones’ recovery has been “fraught with multiple returns to emergency rooms.”
