Corpus Christi leaders to consider plastic bag ban

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Leaders of another Texas city will consider whether disposable plastic bags should be banned.

The Corpus Christi City Council on Tuesday is scheduled to review a plan that would require retailers that use plastic bags to charge for the items, stop using the bags or pay a fine.

Austin on March 1 instituted a ban on disposable plastic and paper bags. The Texas Retailers Association has gone to court to challenge the measure.

The Corpus Christi proposal was on the May 28 City Council agenda but was delayed amid a review of the lawsuit against Austin.

Some Dallas leaders are also pushing for a ban on plastic bags amid environmental concerns.

Brownsville in 2011 banned single-use plastic bags commonly given to customers at grocery and retail stores.
