Dallas-area fire captain found fatally shot in vehicle

ROYSE CITY, Texas (AP) — Police say a Dallas-area firefighter has been found shot to death in a vehicle and one person was detained in the investigation.

Royse City police Chief Jeff Stapleton didn’t immediately say who was being held Saturday or possible charges.

A University Park spokesman says Fire Department Capt. Robert Poynter was not on duty when he died Friday night. UP spokesman Steve Mace says Poynter joined the department in 1997.

Stapleton says officers responded to a report of a woman trying to stop traffic. Stapleton says the woman told officers that her husband had been shot and was in a vehicle, where a man was found dead.

Stapleton says the woman provided “suspicious and conflicting information” and a third person was believed to have been present.
