Davis, Dewhurst to unveil education agendas

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — State Sen. Wendy Davis and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst will appear in North Texas on Thursday as Davis discusses education proposals for her campaign for governor and Dewhurst announces the education agenda he wants Texas senators to pursue in 2014.

Fort Worth Democrat Davis is the front-runner for the Democratic nomination to replace Gov. Rick Perry. She’ll appear at the University of Texas at Arlington to talk to teachers and school administrators at a roundtable.

Davis and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, the Republican frontrunner, have attacked each other over their dueling visions for what to do with Texas’ schools.

But Davis has not yet unveiled her own specific proposals.

Meanwhile, Dewhurst is scheduled to address a benefit for the United Negro College Fund in Grapevine, where he is expected to make his announcement.

As lieutenant governor, Dewhurst presides over the Texas Senate and while lawmakers are not in session he charges committees to investigate issues for future legislation. The committees hold hearings and develop bills that will be considered during the 2015 legislative session.

The chairman of the Senate Education Committee is Houston Republican Dan Patrick, who is running against Dewhurst in the Republican primary. Patrick is a strong advocate of charter schools and a fierce Dewhurst critic.
