ANGLETON, Texas (AP) — County leaders south of Houston have banned people from entering the Gulf waters at the popular San Luis Pass where more than 10 people have drowned in the last four years.
Brazoria County sheriff’s Lt. Varon Snelgrove says the effort by county commissioners to ban swimmers and others began before a man and his sonswin-in-law drowned Monday in the rip currents of the pass.
The ban takes effect Aug. 20. The eastern side of the pass is in Galveston County, where Snelgrove says a similar ban is already in place.
Brazoria has had signs cautioning people about entering the waters, but Snelgrove says drownings continued.
He says the surface water often looks calm but the undercurrent is particularly strong as Gulf and bay waters collide at a narrow inlet.
