Fort Worth’s Juneteenth celebration will take place from June 12-19, with the majority of events over the 17-18 weekend.
The event is a commemoration of the abolition of slavery in Texas in June 1865. This is the 152nd anniversary of the emancipation. A full schedule of events is available below.
Juneteenth Celebration Schedule:
-Monday through Friday, June 12-16
7-9 p.m. – Teen Choir Explosion Workshop
This is a free, week-long choir, dance and miming fine arts workshop for those 13-19 years old. The workshops will be held at the TCC-South Performing Arts Center. At the end of the workshops there will be a concert held 4 p.m. Sunday, June 19.
-Friday, June 16
9-11:30 a.m. – Breakfast of Prayer
This is an all-faith, ecumenical service with host, Keith Solis and speaker Rev. Henry Masters.
6-8 p.m. – Opals Walk 2 DC Part 2
A walking camping is being started by Opal Lee at the Baker Chapel AME Church with ultimate hopes to make the administration see Juneteenth as a national holiday.
-Saturday, June 17
7-10 a.m. – 5K/1-mile walk/run; 7-8 a.m. registration; 8-10 event
Money raised from entry fees benefits the Fort Worth African America Museum. Entry fees are $25 for the 5K and $20 for the mile. Door prizes will be given away as well.
9-11 a.m. – Parade; 9 a.m. registration; 10:30 a.m. event
The parade will begin in the Super 1 Food Store Parking Lot on Forest Hill Drive and will ultimately end in the TCC-South Campus parking Lot after passing through Forest Hill Circle Drive, Wichita Street, Joe B. Rushing and CA Robertson.
1-5 p.m. – Empowering You event at TCC Student Union
Empowering you is an event to give more information on needs and services to those in the community, including: healthcare information and screenings, college enrollment and financial aid, housing choices, employment opportunities and more.
1-9 p.m. – Festival Kickoff at the Main Stage
There will be a two division, 3-on-3 basketball tournament with $40 registration. First and second place winners will receive trophies.
2-9 p.m. – Hip Hop Concert
5-6 p.m. – Swing Out Dancing
6-9 p.m. – R&B and Jazz Concert
-Sunday, June 18
2:30 & 4:30 p.m. – Bill Pickett Rodeo at Cowtown Coliseum
4-6 p.m. – Teen Choir Explosion Concert at TCC-South Rotunda Auditorium
-Monday, June 19
7-9 p.m. – Movie Premiere featuring “The Last to Know,” narrated by Opal Lee
The documentary will cover Juneteenth’s history and discuss Opal’s mission to make June 19 a National Day of Observance.
