FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — The daughter of a World War II veteran who survived more than three years in a Japanese prison camp is heartbroken that his military uniform and medals were stolen from a storage unit in her Fort Worth backyard.
Fort Worth police Sgt. Marc Povero said Thursday that they are investigating.
Phyllis Wood says she discovered that the storage unit ripped open Tuesday. She says his uniform “means the world to me,” noting “It symbolized what he endured.”
Her father, Louis Read, died in 2011 at the age of 90. Wood says her father rarely talked about his imprisonment until later in life, when he started speaking publicly.
During the war, he served in the 31st Infantry Regiment in the Pacific and was captured on the Bataan Peninsula.
