Man gets life term for 2015 death of Central Texas officer

GEORGETOWN, Texas (AP) — An Austin man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2015 run-over death of a Central Texas police officer in a drug-related case.

Colby Williamson was sentenced Monday in Georgetown. A jury last Thursday convicted Williamson of murder in the June 2015 death of Hutto police Sgt. Chris Kelley.

An investigation revealed Williamson was high on methamphetamine when an officer tried to stop him for speeding. The suspect drove off and crashed his vehicle.

Prosecutors say Kelley later found Williamson sitting on a doorstep and tried to handcuff him, but Williamson threw the sergeant to the ground and ran to Kelley’s still-running patrol car.

The two struggled in the law enforcement vehicle until Kelley fell out and was run over.
