Moon draws $76,000 in Fort Worth District 4 City Council race; incumbent Scarth still has big war chest

Businessman Cary Moon, the challenger in Fort Worth’s District 4 City Council race against incumbent Danny Scarth, raised more than $76,000 in the opening period of the May city races, according to campaign filings Friday.

Moon, who lives in the Heritage area in the far North part of the district, reporting raising $76,056.72 between Jan. 1 and March 31. That included $49,781.72 from the Fort Worth Police Officers Association Political Action Committee, including in-kind contributions for signs, literature, campaign management, and voter turnout, Moon’s filing said. He recently disclosed support from the police officers and the Fort Worth Firefighters Association, which donated $5,000 in the most recent period, Moon’s report said.

Scarth, who lives in Woodhaven, still had the big campaign war chest at $98,977 cash on hand. Scarth reported raising $4,400 between Jan. 15 and April 8. He spent $12,672.37.

Moon reported spending $15,508.53, having $16,298.97 cash on hand, and loaning $6,619.83 to his campaign.

District 4 includes parts of east Fort Worth and stretches north along the east side of Interstate 35 to Golden Triangle Boulevard in the Alliance Corridor.

In the race for District 2, which comprises the heart of Fort Worth’s North Side and stretches north of Loop 820, Mayor Pro Tem Sal Espino reported $56,425 in contributions between Jan. 1 and March 31, $19,966.42 in expenses, $46,422.27 cash on hand, and $5,000 in a loan to his campaign from a supporter.

Challenger Steve Thornton reported $5,250 in contributions between Feb. 27 and March 30, $12,983.56 in expenses, $7,766.44 in cash on hand, and a $15,100 loan from himself to his campaign. His contributions included $5,000 from the Fort Worth Retired Firefighters Committee for Responsible Government; Thornton, a financial adviser, is a retired Fort Worth firefighter.

In the race for District 5 in southeast and east Fort Worth, incumbent Gyna Bivens reported $26,374.77 in contributions between Jan. 1 and March 30; $14,553.85 in expenses; and $27,999.02 in cash on hand.

Challenger Bob Willoughby reported he had not raised or spent more than $500.

In the race for District 7 in west, northwest and far North Fort Worth, incumbent Dennis Shingleton reported raising $6,000 between Jan. 1 and April 8; $15,665.11 in expenditures; and $67,225.15 in cash on hand. Challenger Andrew Gallagher, who has declined requests for interviews and not appeared at campaign forums, reported raising no money and spending none.

In the race for District 8 in southeast Fort Worth, challenger Sharon Mason-Ford reported $4,597 in contributions; $5,150 in expenditures; and a $653 campaign deficit. No filing was available from incumbent Kelly Allen Gray.
