No June ’16 date hurt Dallas’ GOP convention bid

DALLAS (AP) – Dallas officials who lost out on hosting the 2016 Republican convention say their inability to offer a June date hurt their bid.

Cleveland was selected Monday over Dallas by the Republican National Committee for the 2016 convention.

RNC chairman Reince Priebus didn’t announce a date, but June 27 or July 18, 2016, are the two options under consideration. Party officials want an earlier convention after last year’s event in late summer. But Dallas couldn’t host a convention in June because the American Airlines Center could host NBA or NHL playoff games that month.

Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau CEO Phillip Jones said Monday that the RNC notified him just before Priebus’ televised announcement.

He says he’s disappointed, but will work now to book new business for that summer.
