HOUSTON (AP) — Houston officially has a new mayor with Sylvester Turner taking the oath of office.
A public inauguration is set for Monday but legal requirements mandate Houston’s mayor be sworn in Jan. 2, so Turner took over on Saturday with a private ceremony.
Turner comes to City Hall in Texas’ largest city after serving in the Texas House since 1988. He resigned from that post effective Friday.
He won a runoff last month against businessman Bill King to succeed Annise Parker, who was term limited after six years in office.
