There’s lots to love about North Texas. The weather, people, entertainment.
And safety can be added to that list.
According to the National Council for Home Safety and Security (NCHSC), the North Texas area has 43 of the state’s 100 safest cities with populations over 10,000.
Topping the list is Colleyville, with a population of 26,038. Based on FBI data and its own research, the NCHSC determined that the city has a rate of 0.23 violent crimes per 1,000 people, 26 times lower than the state average. Colleyville is also ranked 11th in the nation among safest cities. At the top of that list is Ridgefield, Connecticut.
The North Texas area, in fact, has the five safest cities in the rankings. Keller (population 47,047) is No. 2, Highland Village (16,357) No. 3, Trophy Club (12,645) No. 4 and Murphy (21,175) No. 5.
Flower Mound (72,600) is No. 9.
“Safety is the most essential service for a city, and I am glad to see our efforts are recognized,” Colleyville Mayor Richard Newton said.
Colleyville police saw a 2 percent drop in reported crime in 2017. The city had 37 reported burglary cases in 2017 compared with 45 in 2016, and 34 burglary of vehicle cases in 2017 compared with 41 in 2016.
“Colleyville’s level of safety would not be achievable without support from the community,” Interim Police Chief Hillary Wreay said. “Colleyville residents look out for one another and have fully supported the police department and its efforts.”
Keller Mayor Pat McGrail also praised his police department and community for creating a safe and comfortable place for residents.
“The keys to Keller’s success are the incredible men and women both who work for the police department and who call Keller home,” McGrail said. “An engaged and proactive community is our best weapon in deterring crime, and we continue to see the successes of that approach in our crime figures each year.”
To create its Texas rankings, NCHSC says, it reviewed the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics along with its own population data and internal research. “We eliminated any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI,” it said.
“The remaining cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) per 1,000 people. These variables were then weighted, with violent crimes accounting for 1.5 of the total (due to their severity) than property crimes,” according to its website, alarms.org/safest-cities-in-texas-2018/
