SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Authorities say a woman is in critical condition after being shot by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy in South Texas.
Authorities say the Bexar County deputy shot the woman early Friday after he pulled to the side of the road believing she was a stranded driver. The deputy told investigators the woman was agitated when he stopped to help.
It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the shooting, but the woman was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that authorities in neighboring Medina County will handle the investigation because it happened in their jurisdiction.
The statement says the deputy, assigned to the detention center, is being placed on administrative leave.
