The Transplant Institute at Medical City Fort Worth has opened a Comprehensive Liver Center for treating patients with advanced liver disease.

According to a news release, this center will offer services for treating patients with liver cancer, advanced liver disease and hepatopancreaticobiliary disease and the staff includes hepatologists, experienced transplant surgeons and staff who have been trained to work with liver disease patients. The center is also able to perform liver transplants.

“The process of liver transplantation takes tremendous coordination, planning and training. In the operating room, our multidisciplinary medical team performs like an orchestra, with Dr. Fayek as the conductor,” said the COO of Medical City Fort Worth, John Corbeil in a news release.

In January of 2017, Medical City Fort Worth was approved to perform liver transplants by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) which, according to the UNOS website, is the organization that runs the national organ transplant system. According to the news release, Medical City Fort Worth’s first liver transplant patient was Leslie Nance, a Carrollton resident.

“We were able to accomplish a full evaluation for Ms. Nance and place her on the transplant list within 48 hours of her admission to our liver program. I’m so grateful for the expertise and commitment of all our liver program team members to make transplant miracles happen for patients like Ms. Nance,” said Medical City Fort Worth’s surgical director of liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery, Sameh A. Fayek, MD.

The news release says the patients with end-stage liver disease or certain liver cancers often choose liver transplantations as their treatment.

Nance said in a news release that “for the first time in several years, I feel I do have a future. Everybody at Medical City Fort Worth has been so friendly and caring. They really care about you, and it makes a difference in your recovery. I can’t tell you how grateful I am.”
