Cook Children’s receives Level II Trauma Center by ACS

The trauma center at Cook Children’s Medical Center has been verified, once again, as a Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This achievement recognizes the trauma center’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients. In addition, this designation signifies Cook Children’s commitment to quality care by having board certified physicians and surgeons available 24-hours a day. The ACS verification process occurs every three years with the current verification expiring April 26, 2022.

Verified trauma centers must meet essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance. In addition to having critical care coverage around the clock, Level II Trauma Centers must provide trauma prevention and continuing education programs for staff. They also must incorporate a comprehensive quality assessment program.

The ACS does not designate trauma centers. Rather, the program provides confirmation that a trauma center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients. The actual establishment and designation is made by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Cook Children’s Medical Center is one of 25 facilities in Texas with this distinction.
