West Nile virus

Three mosquito samples in Grapevine have tested positive for carrying the West Nile virus, city officials have confirmed.

Positive mosquito samples were detected in the 3000 block of Meadowmere Lane, 1500 block of North Dooley Street and the 300 block of West Dallas Road.

All three areas are scheduled for mosquito control ground spraying beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday.

While the insecticide is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency for treatment, according to the city, residents are advised to take a few precautions during spraying:

City officials recommend that residents in the above areas avoid contact with the spray by staying indoors; keep windows and doors closed during spraying; and remain in their vehicles with the windows up and the air conditioner on if they are in vehicles while spraying is occurring.

Residents out during the scheduled spraying time should be alert for trucks and should not follow them. The city also advises residents to cover ornamental ponds and birdbaths; bring pets inside for the night; and bring in pet dishes or cover them.

Residents who come in contact with the spray are advised to wash affected areas thoroughly with soap and water. The spray breaks down quickly in the presence of sunlight and has no residual effect. If residents have health problems, such as asthma, residents are advised to take precautions as directed by their physicians, if necessary.

Residents should eliminate any standing water to prevent mosquito breeding and the spread of West Nile virus, according to city officials. Breeding places for mosquitoes include swimming pools that are not kept clean, stagnant ponds, pet watering dishes, birdbaths, potted plants, old tires, empty containers, toys, clogged rain gutters and French drains. Standing water should be eliminated promptly.

Complimentary mosquito “dunks” that may be placed in standing water that cannot be drained are available at the city’s Municipal Service Center, 501 Shady Brook from 7a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Those wanting to report standing water or mosquito problems may call 817-410-3330. Additional information is available at www.GrapevineTexas.gov.
