Plans underway to retrieve Americans with Ebola

NEW YORK (AP) – A small private jet based in Atlanta has been dispatched to Liberia to bring back two American aid workers sick with Ebola.

The two are Dr. Kent Brantly, who served a residency at Fort Worth’s John Peter Smith Hospital, and Nancy Writebol of North Carolina. Both worked for missionary groups at a Liberia hospital that treats Ebola patients.

Officials say the jet is outfitted with a special, portable tent designed for transporting patients with highly infectious diseases.

The plane sent to Africa can only carry one patient at a time. Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital says it expects one patient to be transferred there “within the next several days” but did not specify which patient because of health care privacy laws. The hospital has a special isolation unit.

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed more than 700 people.
