Mohanakrishnan Sathyamoorthy, M.D., FACC, has been named as the new chair of Internal Medicine at the TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine.
“I’m so excited about this unique opportunity to approach medical education with a new and forward-thinking perspective,” said Sathyamoorthy, chief of staff at Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center.
More commonly known as Dr. Mo to his patients, he is currently an invasive cardiologist in practice in Fort Worth. He has an accomplished scientific background, including working at the National Institutes of Health with expertise in thrombosis and the pharmacology of blood thinning therapeutics.
“Dr. Sathyamoorthy is a perfect fit for our School of Medicine. He has a stellar reputation as a physician and scientist, being a role model in both areas for our students and faculty, and he offers a robust national network of peers to our school,” TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine Founding Dean Stuart Flynn, M.D., said. “His leadership, passion and vision for training future physicians and drive for excellence fuels our school and ensures our students will have excellent mentors and training.”
In his role as an academic chair, he will oversee faculty recruitment and retention in his department, advance the educational and research mission of his department and school and represent the school within the community and greater medical field.
“We set the mission and vision for the department and it wonderfully aligns with the school’s vision and mission,” Sathymoorthy said. “Our role is to recruit faculty and it’s critical to find the best physicians and teachers for our innovative model of education and who embrace the training of empathetic physicians who are lifelong learners.”
Currently at Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center, he serves as the chief of the medical staff and chief of the Cardiovascular Division. He also was appointed as the first medical director of Cardiology for the newly formed Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Fort Worth in 2015.
“Dr. Sathymoorthy has been such a great physician and scientist, keeping us ahead of the curve in the constant evolving treatment for heart patients,” Baylor Scott & White Health CEO James Hinton said. “We’re excited to have him representing us in this groundbreaking approach to medical education at the School of Medicine.”
Sathyamoorthy earned his bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering and master’s in engineering from Johns Hopkins University, during which time he pursued research in finite element biomechanical modeling of the heart.
He earned his M.D. with Distinction in Research from the SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine, where he was honored at graduation with the Award for Outstanding Achievements in Research and The Citizenship Award for Outstanding Contributions to the School of Medicine.
He was also selected as a NIH Clinical Research Training Program Research Scholar at the National Institutes of Health while in medical school. He trained at NIH for more than a year in an internationally renowned functional genomics program.
Sathymoorthy finished the American Board of Internal Medicine Research Pathway training as a physician-scientist in internal medicine and cardiovascular medicine and was named a Harrison Scholar at Vanderbilt University. He subsequently served as chief fellow, during which time he was instrumental in Curriculum Vitae Fellowship reorganization and graduate medical education re-accreditation.
Currently he is an active member of the adjunct faculty at Vanderbilt University. He has been published in peer-reviewed literature and often gives invited lectures in his areas of clinical and scientific expertise across the country and internationally.
