AyuVis Research, a TechFW client focusing on a new class of antibiotics to counteract severe infections, was selected this week as a 2017 Defense TechConnect Innovation awardee during the Defense Innovation Summit in Tampa, Florida.

“We are very proud to announce our selection,” said Dr. Suchismita Acharya, the founder and CEO. “Only 15 percent of all innovations submitted to the Defense Innovation Summit (DiTAC) were selected.”

The summit brings together innovators, businesses and national defense leaders to accelerate state-of-the-art technology solutions in support of national security and the warfighter in the areas of energy, cyber, medical, systems and space. According to summit executive director Jennifer Rocha, rankings are based on the potential positive impact the submitted technology will have for the warfighter and national security. More information about the award and the summit is at http://defenseinnovation.us.

Infections that are resistant to current antibiotics are the leading cause of death of patients in hospital intensive care units. Ayuvis is focusing on a new drug to treat complicated abdominal infections. Acharya expects to progress to the initial phase of clinical trials by 2019.

Acharya is a trained organic, medicinal and pharmaceutical chemist with more than 15 years of cumulative academic and pharmaceutical experience with UT Southwestern Medical Center, Alcon Labs and Novartis. AyuVis Research was founded in 2014 and has received funding from the National Institutes of Health. Acharya also is collaborating with the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.

“This award for defense innovation is just the latest recognition that Ayuvis is on the right track and doing important work,” said Darlene Boudreaux, Executive Director of TechFW. “Earlier this year, Ayuvis was one of only 18 companies nationwide chosen by the National Institutes of Health’s iCorp program. This was an intense two-month program involving conversations with medical providers in private, public and military hospitals around the country, making sure that Ayuvis is on the right track to produce a product that they need. I expect big things from this TechFW client!”
