UNTHSC RECEIVES GRANT FOR GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine at UNT Health Science Center has been awarded a $250,000 grant to establish a new graduate medical education residency program with three partners in Hood County.

The grant by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board will help TCOM establish a new Family Medicine residency program with Lake Granbury Medical Center, Lakeside Physicians and Ruth’s Place Clinic.

“We are very grateful to receive this grant, which will help TCOM establish more medical residency programs for our graduates,” Dr. Frank Filipetto, TCOM Dean, said in a news release. “These three new partnerships will have a tremendous impact for Granbury and the surrounding communities. In an effort led by Dr. Lisa R. Nash, TCOM’s faculty and staff worked extremely hard to put these partnerships in place, and I’m very proud of their accomplishment.”

TCOM was one of only four applicants selected to receive the one-time award out of 13 grant applications.

These planning grants have been instrumental in building new graduate medical education programs in Texas, said Nash, TCOM’s Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education.

“With the growth in Texas medical schools in recent years, coordinated growth in [graduate medical education] is essential to keep these graduates in Texas for practice,” Nash said.

The grant was funded from a General Revenue appropriation and is intended to promote an increase in available first-year medical residency positions in the state.

Through a competitive process, the grants provide support for hospitals, medical schools and community-based health centers interested in creating new residency programs.
