TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine has appointed James Marshall, M.D., as its first academic chair of pediatrics. At the school of medicine, Marshall will lead the planning, operations and oversight within the pediatrics department.
“I’m a biologist at heart and I love to watch things grow,” Marshall said. “So, the opportunity to lead a group that’s focused on training young minds is a huge opportunity.”
With nearly 30 years of medical experience, Marshall currently serves as the vice president and chief research officer for Cook Children’s Medical Center, practicing pediatric critical care medicine within its physician network.
Marshall brings a unique skillset among physicians in our area, said Jim Cunningham, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer at Cook Children’s.
“As a critical care doctor, he has provided incredible bedside care to our region’s most ill children,” Cunningham said. “But as our chief research officer, Dr. Marshall has been dedicated to helping us investigate the value of new medications, leading-edge medical devices and therapeutic regimens, which can be used to improve the health of children in our area and around the world.”
At Cook Children’s, Marshall developed a collaborative and integrated research program that functions as a centralized system of pediatric research.
“He has been a leader in pediatrics for years, not only at Cook but also in the community at large. He brings an incredibly rich experience to the school,” said Stephen Scott, M.D., senior associate dean of Educational Affairs and Accreditation for the TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine.
After undergraduate and graduate education at Saint Louis University and Tulane Medical School, respectively, Marshall completed pediatric residency at Stanford University followed by dual fellowships in pediatric critical care medicine and clinical pharmacology at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
