Fort Worth theatre legend and Circle Theatre founder and executive director Rose Pearson has died following a long battle with cancer. She was 69.

For 35 years, Pearson and her husband, Bill Newberry, have led Circle Theatre which has as its mission to present “innovative theatre in an intimate setting,” according to a letter on the Circle Theatre website penned by Tim Long, associate producer at the theatre, now located in downtown Fort Worth in Sundance Square.

Pearson, who previously worked with Fort Worth theatre icon William Garber, began Circle Theatre on Bluebonnet Circle near Texas Christian University. It eventually moved to Magnolia Avenue, prior to that area’s renaissance, before moving to its current home in Sundance Square.

This weekend the theatre opened its newest offering, The Taming by Lauren Gunderson. In Long’s note, he said the theatre will continue Pearson’s legacy when it begins its 36th season next year.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Circle Theatre in Rose’s name.
