Fort Worth Botanic Garden and BRIT to celebrate National Public Gardens Day

To commemorate National Public Gardens Day on May 11, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden and the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) are hosting an inaugural “Lunch in the Garden” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Botanic Gardens.

This free event is open to the public, a news release said.

“We want to encourage folks to take a midday break, get out of their offices or homes, and experience one of Fort Worth’s most beautiful attractions during the loveliest time of the year,” Botanic Garden Director Bob Byers said in the release. “With many of the gardens in full bloom, it’s a visually stunning time to enjoy the Garden.”

The event aims to draw attention to the nation’s public gardens, which include botanical gardens, arboreta, conservatories, educational gardens and historical landscapes, the release explained. At 110 acres, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden includes the historic Rose Garden, Fuller Garden, Japanese Garden and more.

“Celebrating National Public Gardens Day with ‘Lunch in the Garden’ is another great way that BRIT can partner with the Fort Worth Botanic Garden,” BRIT President Ed Schneider said in the release. “We are finding more and more ways for our two organizations, which are located on the same campus, to collaborate and provide the public with a richer plant and outdoor experience.”

Those who attend the event are invited to bring their own lunch and blankets or lawn chairs, though some outdoor seating will be provided, and several food trucks will be available. Botanic Garden senior horticulturist Steve Huddleston will offer a free, guided walking tour from 12:30 to 1 p.m. and acoustic guitarist Victor Andrada will provide musical accompaniment.
