Healing Hearts hits 30-year milestone

This summer marks three decades that Camp Fire has been offering help and hope to the child who lives in anger over a murdered parent, the grandchild who has anxiety about visiting hospitals and the sibling who sleeps with sister’s shirt because it still smells like her. The deadline for applications is July 14.

At Camp El Tesoro de la Vida, children can enter a world of healing and peace. A week-long camp planned with 90 percent fun and 10 percent counseling awaits children ages 6 to 17 who have experienced the loss of a loved one.

This summer’s camp begins July 30 and ends with a closing ceremony on Aug. 5. At the ceremony, campers place rocks painted in memory of their loved one at the base of a newly planted tree, Camp Fire said in a news release.

Due to the uniqueness of El Tesoro de la Vida, applications are reviewed by licensed therapists, who will begin making calls for family interviews in May. Camper applications for the program are now available.

Acceptance to El Tesoro de la Vida will be based upon the counselor interview and recommendation. For more information on the program, application process, or donor activities, contact Camp Fire First Texas.

More than half of the youth attending El Tesoro de la Vida are on scholarships funded by donors. This year’s benefit dinner is Wednesday, April 19 at 6 p.m. at Cendera Center in Fort Worth. here is no cost to attend the event, and funds raised through donation, silent and live auctions provide scholarships for campers.

Emcee Justin Frazell from 95.9 The Ranch takes the audience through the life of an El Tesoro de la Vida Camper, like 15-year-old Michael, whose story was told at last year’s dinner.
