Fort Worth historians, take note: an exhibit showcasing early city records opens Tuesday at Fort Worth Central Library, 500 W. Third St. Though most of the city’s early records were destroyed in an 1876 courthouse fire, several records predating 1895 have been discovered and are part of the exhibit. Those include some bond books dating from 1873 through the 1890s, and Fort Worth Fire Department records dated 1883-1893. Other records on display include maps chronicling the development of early city neighborhoods beginning at about 1900; records related to mass transit from the 1870s to the 1970s; and ledger books containing property and poll tax records from the early 20th century. Also on display is a small collection of photographs depicting Fort Worth street scenes. The library, which already has about 10,000 items related to Fort Worth and Tarrant County history, will add more items to the exhibit from all city departments as they become available.
