Additional Details: BRIT exhibits its native plant specimens and pairs them with historical art from its library collection Exhibit opens Saturday, January 11, 2013 and runs through April, 2013 FORT WORTH &mdash The Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) presents &ldquo Native to this Place: The Plants and Prairies of North Central Texas&rdquo exhibit opening on Saturday, January 11 and running through Saturday, April 27, 2013, at BRIT. Admission to this exhibit is free. North Central Texas is the transitional zone between the forests of East Texas and the desert grasslands of West Texas. It is home to nearly 50% of the plant species found in Texas. Thirty-five plant species from our local prairies will be on display in the exhibit, represented by herbarium specimens, along with illustrations and descriptions of these plant species from our library books. Some of the specimens date back to 1885. Exhibit specimens were selected in part from the Master Plant List for Texas Range and Pasture Plants, which will be used for the 4H and FFA plant identification competition held during the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo in January. The exhibit will also feature a Kid&rsquo s Zone for children to learn fun facts about the prairie. Come see the collections and get to know little bluestem, summer gayfeather, and Engelmann&rsquo s daisy compare buffalo grass to Bermuda grass and learn more about the value of fire and the danger of invasive species. Be introduced to the beautiful and valuable plants of our prairie heritage.
