Newsmakers: Museum to honor actor, Dallas Cowboys

The National Day of the American Cowboy will kick off with a weekend full of Western-themed events on July 24, beginning with the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum Hall of Fame Rodeo at Cowtown Coliseum in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

The doors will open at 7 p.m. and the rodeo will begin at 8 p.m. The Coliseum is located at 121 E. Exchange Ave.

On July 25, the museum will host the Dr. W. Marvin Dulaney Western Heritage Symposium from 9 a.m. to noon. The museum is located at 3400 Mount Vernon Ave. in Fort Worth. Guest speakers will include Debbie Liles, history lecturer at the University of North Texas and author, who will discuss “Black Slaves in the Texas Cattle Industry.” Other topics to be covered include the buffalo soldiers and the Chisholm Trail. Admission is free.

Also on July 25, nine Western legends will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during its annual induction ceremony and banquet at River Ranch, located at 500 N.E. 23rd St. in the Fort Worth Stockyards. A reception will begin at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7.

This year’s honorees are: Academy Award actor and Grammy-winning singer Jamie Foxx; former Dallas Cowboys Walt Garrison and Randy White; Judge Paul L. Brady, the first African American appointed a federal administrative law judge; champion bull rider Danell Tipton; and Fort Worth businessman and developer Steve Murrin. Posthumous inductees are Fort Worth businessman, philanthropist and preservationist Holt Hickman; Gordon Tonips, a Comanche and Kiowa artist and sculptor; and civic leader and barber Harvey Means.

Energy

1845 Oil Field Services hired David Klvac as chief financial officer. Klvac brings almost 20 years of account and finance experience, mostly in the oil and gas production, oilfield service and power industries. Klvac was CFO, chief accounting officer and treasurer for PostRock Energy Corp. and its predecessor companies, Quest Resource Corp., Quest Energy Partners and Quest Midstream Partners. He also was vice president and corporate controller of Tronox Inc. and assistant corporate controller of Smithfield Foods Inc. Klvac replaces James Kennedy, who has been CFO since March 2014. Kennedy will continue as a member of AVC Partners with primary focus on 1845, which is one of the primary investments of AVC Partners.

FTS International CEO Greg Lanham has been selected as the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2015 Southwest in the energy category. Randy Gier, CEO of RAVE Restaurant Group, the parent company of Pie Five Pizza and Pizza Inn, is EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2015 Award for the Southwest region. Both Lanham and Gier move on to compete in the Entrepreneur of the Year’s 2015 national program. Award winners in several categories, as well as the National Entrepreneur of the Year winner, will be announced in November.

Law

GetLegal.com appointed Philip D. Vasquez as senior vice president of FuenteLegal.com, GetLegal’s sister site that serves the Hispanic community. Vasquez has served as president of the Mexican American Bar Association of Texas and was inducted as a lifetime member of the Hispanic National Bar Association. He has been a leader in various Hispanic chambers, including as a board member with the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Vasquez has experience in oil, petroleum and energy law. He was appointed by President Clinton as senior policy adviser to the U.S. Secretary of Defense on the oil- and gas-producing countries of Latin America and as deputy assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Energy.

Nonprofit Organizations

Kathryn Jacob is the new president and CEO of SafeHaven of Tarrant County. Jacob comes to SafeHaven from the Housing Crisis Center of Dallas, where she was its executive director for the past five years. Jacob has had numerous leadership positions over the past 15 years, including associate director of program services for the Salvation Army Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex Command, executive director of Doctors for Healthy Communities in New York, and national marketing director for Charles Nechtem Associates/Oasis Behavioral Health in Newark, N.J. She began her social work career with the Peace Corps in Turkmenistan. Jacob is a 2013 graduate of Leadership Texas.

Real Estate

Jeff Johnson joined Trademark Property Co. as senior vice president of development. Johnson brings more than 20 years of real estate experience to Trademark. He most recently served Fareway Stores Inc. as director of real estate for the chain of 112 grocery stores. He was also founder and president of Cormac Co.

Bill Brokaw joined Hillwood Urban as senior vice president. He returns to Hillwood Development Co. after serving as executive director in Cushman & Wakefield’s Dallas office. Brokaw served in a similar role at Cousins Properties Inc. and was vice president of leasing at Hillwood Development. In 2013 and 2014, he received the Top National Broker-Agency Leasing Award from Cushman & Wakefield. Brokaw has been a leader in numerous civic and community organizations, including on the boards of Downtown Dallas Inc., The Real Estate Council of Dallas, NTCAR, Carry the Load, Baylor Healthcare Foundation and Young Life.

Brandt Rensmeyer joined SRS Real Estate Partners as associate in the Dallas-Fort Worth office. He will focus on landlord representation and land brokerage. He spent two years with the Woodmont Co., where he leased Southlake Park Village and was responsible for leasing reports, merchandising plans and oversight of various construction processes.

Retail

Pier 1 Imports Inc. named retail industry veteran Jeffrey N. Boyer as executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective July 27.

Laura A. Coffey, who has been executive vice president and interim CFO, will be named to a separate executive position within the company.

Boyer, a certified public accountant, has extensive leadership experience in large organizations and publicly traded corporations, and experience in accounting, finance, capital markets, strategic planning and risk management. Since September 2013, he has been executive vice president, chief administrative officer and CFO for Tuesday Morning Corp. Prior to joining Tuesday Morning, he worked from 2008-2013 at 24 Hour Fitness Worldwide Holdings Inc., as executive vice president, CFO and chief operating officer. Boyer held top-level positions previously with Michaels Stores Inc., Kmart Corp., Sears, Roebuck & Co., Pillsbury Co. and Kraft General Foods. He began his career as an accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1980.
