The Association of Fundraising Professionals Fort Worth Metro Chapter will pay tribute to community philanthropists during a luncheon Nov. 7 at the Omni Fort Worth Hotel. Emceed by NBC 5’s Deborah Ferguson, the event will celebrate National Philanthropy Day, Nov. 15, the day set aside to honor donors, volunteers, corporations, foundations, small businesses and youth who make a difference in their communities. This year, more than 100 communities and 50,000 people around the world will participate in the day’s events and celebrations. This year’s area honorees include: Roby V. Key, Outstanding Professional Fundraising Executive; Will A. Courtney Sr., Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser; Ryan Scott Prince, Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy; Shirlee and Taylor Gandy, Distinguished Philanthropists; and Ella C. LONE STAR SALUTE TO TROOPS LegacyTexas Bank’s annual Lone Star Salute, a campaign to collect and distribute care packages to military personnel stationed worldwide, will run through Veterans Day, Nov. 12. Collection boxes are located at each of the 20 LegacyTexas Bank offices throughout the Metroplex, and area residents and businesses may bring in items for troops deployed from Texas military bases. With support from the DFW Blue Star Mothers, packages will be assembled and shipped by bank employees in time for Christmas delivery. Requested food items include beef jerky, powdered drinks, protein bars, candy, seasonings, nuts and other snacks. Batteries, small games, notes and holiday cards, toiletries and personal care items and socks also are needed. BARROW TO SPEAK AT HOGAN EVENT Lance Barrow, producer at CBS Sports, will be the keynote speaker at the Ben Hogan Breakfast Club event on Nov. 6 from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. Frederick G. Slabach, president of Texas Wesleyan University, and Robert Stennett, executive director of the Ben Hogan Foundation, will formally announce a new partnership between Texas Wesleyan and The First Tee of Fort Worth. The Ben Hogan Foundation Mentor Scholarship will provide scholarships to selected candidates coming out of The First Tee program. The $400,000 award program represents the largest privately-institutionally funded scholarships at the university. FWISD EXPANDS AP PROGRAM A grant of more than $1 million will help expand the National Math and Science Initiative’s Comprehensive Advanced Placement (AP) program to North Side and Trimble Tech high schools in the Fort Worth Independent School District. The Sid W. Richardson, the Radler, Rainwater Charitable and the Thomas M., Helen McKee & John P. Ryan foundations, along with Chase Bank, presented the donation during an Oct. 21 kick-off celebration at North Side High School. These sponsors support programs that increase the number and diversity of secondary school graduates who are proficient in math and science and who choose STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers. Currently, there are more than 20 AP course offerings in the Fort Worth school district including English, mathematics, science, social science and world languages.
LACE AND LEVI’S BENEFIT Project 4031 Foundation will host the Lace and Levi’s benefit Nov. 7 from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Stampede Room at Stockyards Station, 140 E. Exchange Ave., in Fort Worth. The foundation, taking its name from the biblical book of Isaiah, 40:31, works to encourage and support people and their families during the “end of life journey.” The event will celebrate Hospice and Palliative Care Month and honor those who support the hospice community. The benefit will include dinner, dancing to Mark Philpot & Sam Riggs and the Night People, and cowboy gambling. THE PARENTING CENTER LAUNCHES REBRAND Fort Worth-based The Parenting Center is sporting a new logo and rebranding itself. The rebranding is the first for the organization since its start in 1974. Last year, it completed a strategic plan that included rebranding with help from Global Prairie Integrated Marketing Communications. The rebranding was funded by a grant from the Amon G. Carter Foundation. The new brand includes a tagline, “Our goal is to surround children with the type of support we all want to have.” “The rebrand is more than just a new logo,” said Executive Director Barbara Lamsens. “What we are doing in this process is infusing the agency with new energy about who we are and what we do – create strong families, which creates a stronger community.” The Parenting Center’s 20th annual M-Pak Inc. Tee It Up Fore Kids Golf Tournament was rained out Oct. 14 and has been rescheduled for Nov. 18. FIRST CHOICE ER DONATES TO HALTOM HIGH First Choice Emergency Room opened its 20th facility on Oct. 11 at 4551 Western Center Blvd. in North Fort Worth. The new Beach Western Commons facility is First Choice Emergency Room’s seventh facility in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and is open 24 hours, 7 days per week. To celebrate the opening, First Choice Emergency Room made a donation at a ribbon cutting ceremony to the Haltom High School Band. After the ribbon cutting, First Choice Emergency Room hosted an open house.
