Editorial: We endorse Charlie Geren; he’s earned your vote

It’s Election Day and if you haven’t voted yet, you still have some important decisions to make. For voters in state House District 99, one of those decisions is an easy one.

State Rep. Charlie Geren, R-Fort Worth, needs to be working for us in Austin and he needs to be re-nominated and re-elected to do it.

Geren has been representing District 99 in Austin since 2001 and he has served the district well, rising to powerful committee appointments using his unique brand of outspoken candor and clearheaded compromise. Geren knows how to ruffle feathers but also how to get along with allies and opponents alike in the shifting sands of Texas politics.

Geren plots his moves and positions as carefully and precisely as he brews up the tasty sauce at his popular Fort Worth barbecue joint, The Railhead. He’s known for being tart and then disarmingly sweet when he sets out to achieve political goals that align with those of our area.

His secret ingredient is knowing when to compromise – and that offends some on the far right of his party. The Tea Party has tried to beat him before and once again he faces opposition in the Republican primary from Bo French, who ran against him in the last election.

French is a smart young guy but has no political or elective office experience and his financial support comes largely from outside of Tarrant County.

Frankly, we’re tired of outsiders pouring money into Tarrant County political races. These are our candidates and our local government officials, and the voters in this county are perfectly capable of deciding whether we want them to remain in office.

Geren’s seniority is vital to our region and so is the unparalled quality of his service. We recommend that voters keep Geren working for us. District 99 and the entire state of Texas need his unique blend of independence, outspokenness, and compromise. Local voters should support him in the primary and make it clear to well-heeled outsiders that we don’t welcome their interference or need their help in choosing our representatives.
