The Fort Worth Chapter of the American Institute of Architects announces the results of its annual statewide Excellence in Architecture Student Design Awards Jury.
The AIA Fort Worth Excellence in Design Awards Program recognizes outstanding work by students of the 8 accredited architecture schools of Texas. Annually, a jury of prominent regional architects is assembled to select projects for recognition. This year, the jury was led by Russell Buchanan, FAIA, of Buchanan Architecture and was joined on the jury by Richard Hung, AIA of VLK Architects and Janie Garner, AIA of Hanfeld Hoffer Stanford .
The jury reviewed 56 projects from six of the eight accredited schools of Texas and singled out four projects for recognition.
One project was awarded the highest level award, an Honor Award, which also includes a $500 scholarship. Three projects received Merit Awards.
These projects will be honored during the AIA Fort Worth Awards Ceremony to be held at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth on Feb. 2.

Russell Buchanan FAIA: “A brilliant design solution that is ambitious in its scale, yet restrained in its interaction with the site. A compelling project that the jury was unanimous in selecting for an Honor Award.”
Richard Hunt AIA: “For me this project achieved the trifecta of honor criteria; design concept, concept execution and presentation quality. It really stood above the other projects. Simply wonderful.”
Janie Garner AIA: “The dam is a graceful and elegant solution. The project is public and purposeful, and uses a beautiful piece of modern design to save architectural culture.”

Russell Buchanan FAIA: “A conceptually rich project with a simple and elegant solution.”
Richard Hunt AIA: “I was very impressed with the approach to rethinking the pragmatic nature of a typical elementary school schedule, using that opportunity to elevate the transitional periods in a collaborative and spontaneous way. Then take that concept and apply it to the architecture made this a worthy study.”
Janie Garner AIA: “Break-Time!” is a literal fun and playful “twist” on the traditional elementary school.“

Richard Hunt AIA: “What really stood out to me, was the use of a scientific approach to developing a design concept. Then using the data discovered to create a form regardless of the final product. Which, in this case, still produced a beautiful product.”
Janie Garner AIA: “The House of Artificial Light” is incredibly vibrant and captivating.”
