A new Barnes & Noble Inc. will be opening a new store at Legacy West in Plano on Nov. 10, but don’t judge this bookstore by its cover.
The new location combines a bookstore with a full-service restaurant, the Barnes & Noble Kitchen, which features a menu, as well as a premium selection of wine and locally sourced craft beer. The store is one of the new smaller-format prototypes being tested by the New York-based company.

The 10,000-square-foot store offers a comfortable environment for customers to browse and buy. The ash-wood surfaces of the bookshelves and mix of concrete, carpet and wood floors throughout help make various sections of the store feel intimate and distinct in their purpose, according to a news release from the company.
The Barnes & Noble Kitchen will seat 113 and offer a menu featuring shareable dishes as well as a selection of premium wines by the glass or the bottle and locally sourced craft beer, including popular offerings from area breweries including Four Corners, Lakewood, Community and others.
The menu, which reflects the seasonality of local ingredients, features dishes that include herb-rubbed chicken, pan-roasted salmon, a brisket hickory burger, hummus and cowgirl cheese plate for the table, gluten-free options and much more. Chef Robbie Nowlin, who will lead the restaurant team, has received critical acclaim for his signature dishes that emphasize fresh, local ingredients. He comes to the Barnes & Noble Kitchen after a successful run as executive head chef at Boudro’s Texas Bistro and Zinc Bistro & Wine Bar in San Antonio.
The Kitchen at Barnes & Noble Legacy West features an array of indoor and outdoor seating options with full table service, as well as informal spots to settle in with a cup of coffee or glass of wine and a good book. Indoors, patrons can choose to sit at a community worktable with easily accessible outlets, at the bar or at a table with table service. Weather permitting, large accordion doors allow the restaurant to open directly onto a patio for outdoor dining next to a large water fountain, as well as an outdoor bar area.
Barnes & Noble Legacy West also features new technology. Booksellers will be equipped with mobile engagement devices providing detailed information on all products available from Barnes & Noble to better assist customers as they search and discover their next great read. Additionally, once the product is in the customer’s hand, they can check out without a visit to the cashwrap. Self-serve kiosks located throughout the store will provide a robust platform for customers to discover books and other products and locate them in the store through an interactive store mapping tool, as well as enabling customers to order and ship directly to their home.
