HGTV knocks

Pilot airing for local couple with building, design firm

With two thriving home design businesses and a growing online community of more than 14,700 fans on Instagram alone, it seemed only a matter of time before HGTV came knocking for Brett and Kara Phillips of Aledo.

It was something the couple never expected.

“We didn’t set out to be online or TV personalities. It was the furthest thing from our minds,” Brett said in a news release. “Our work stemmed from a personal passion to design timeless homes that we and our clients could love for a long time.”

Home to Last is co-produced by RTR Media (the team behind HGTV’s Home Town and Hidden Potential) and 547Barnard (Lindsey Weidhorn), of Fixer Upper and Property Brothers fame.

The release explained that the pilot episode shows the Phillips renovation of a local family’s newly-purchased house to turn it into their forever home.

The Phillips’ industry experience starts with their first business, High Street Homes, established in 2012 out of their own quest to turn their house into a “timeless” home.

Their mission turned to obsession, leading them to move nine times over seven years.

“Each new build and move taught us something about what it takes to love how you live every day,” Kara said in the release. “We’re taking all of those lessons and pouring them into the families we serve on the show and in our businesses.”

Originally a boutique building company, the couple’s business expanded to include real estate in 2014 and remodel and interior design services in 2015.

And, most recently, the couple launched business No. 2, Phillips House Co. — their home design brand and online shop.

Since the start, Brett and Kara have documented their adventures on their blog and Instagram, and it was only a matter of time before producers showed up with the idea to build a home design show around the pair.

“We were floored when production companies started expressing their interest in us. Admittedly, we were tentative. We were so content with what we were doing, the local clients we were serving and the family life we had,” Kara said in the release.

“We didn’t want to rock the boat. But our producers at RTR and 547 Barnard are a team of the most incredible female leaders. They are beyond genuine, hardworking and just great at what they do. We knew we could trust them and are very grateful to be on this journey with them,” she said.

At this point, there are no guarantees the show will get picked up as a series. But for now, they have their pilot.

“We had the time of our lives filming Home to Last, but our purpose to help families create timeless homes will stay the same whether we go to series or not,” Brett said in the release. “Between running the businesses, blogging at Phillips House Co, raising our kids and working on a few other secret projects, we’ve got our hands full.”
