Grand Prairie council approves plans for Ikea

On Tuesday, the Grand Prairie City Council unanimously approved plans for the development of a new Ikea home furnishing store with a planned opening in the fall of 2017.

Construction will begin in the fall of 2016 with the construction phase creating 500 jobs. When the store opens in 2017 it is expected to employ about 300.

Located 14 miles west of downtown Dallas and 18 miles east of downtown Fort Worth, the 297,000-square-foot proposed Ikea Grand Prairie and its 1,150 parking spaces would be built on 30 acres along the eastern side of State Highway 161 and Mayfield Road, north of Interstate 20.

There are currently more than 370 Ikea stores in 47 countries, including 41 in the U.S. In North Texas, there is an Ikea location in Frisco.
