IKEA secures contractors for Grand Prairie store

Swedish retailer IKEA has hired contractors for a Grand Prairie store planned to open in fall 2017.

IKEA has hired contractors to construct the Swedish retailer’s second North Texas store.

Pending remaining permits, the 290,000-square-foot Grand Prairie store is set for October groundbreaking and open in fall 2017.

Other Texas stores are in Frisco, as well as in Houston and Round Rock

MYCON General Contractors has been selected to serve as construction manager for site work and store development project. The Dallas-based commercial contractor specializes in ground-up construction services for the retail, industrial, office, religious, and healthcare markets.

Other firms assisting with the Grand Prairie project are real estate brokerage Segovia Real Estate Group for site selection; Jackson Walker, local land use counsel; Winkelmann and Associates, civil civil engineering; Lee Engineering, traffic and transportation planning; KJWW Engineering Consultants, structural services; Terracon, geotechnical services; ACIES Engineering, mechanical, electrical and plumbing design; and GreenbergFarrow, project architect.

“With a contractor on board, plans can proceed towards opening the future IKEA Grand Prairie,” said Lars Petersson, IKEA U.S. president, commenting in a news release.

“This store will provide a more convenient IKEA shopping experience for current and potential customers throughout central and western parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex who maybe live too far from IKEA Frisco,” Petersson said.

IKEA Grand Prairie will feature nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, 50 room settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area, and a 450-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries and salmon plates, as well as American dishes.

In addition to more than 500 jobs expected to be created during the construction phase, more than 300 co-workers will join IKEA when the new store opens.

The store will be located on 30 acres along the eastern side of State Highway 161 and Mayfield Road, north of Interstate 20. An additional 15 acres of land contiguous to the store eventually could be developed to accommodate opportunities for ancillary commercial or retail uses, according to company officials.

IKEA operates more than 380 IKEA stores in 48 countries, including 42 in the United States. More information is available at IKEA-USA.com,@IKEAUSA, @IKEAUSANews, or IKEAUSA on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest.
