UPDATE: $215M hotel, indoor ski project planned for Grand Prairie

Officials in Grand Prairie are expected to announce a $215 million project that will include a Hard Rock Hotel and an indoor ski facility later today. The project from Grand Alps Group LLC will be located on Belt Line Road, north of Interstate 30 and west of Lone Star Park. It could create as many as 1,900 jobs, according to city officials. Grand Prairie officials say the hotel will have 300 rooms, two restaurants, meeting spaces, a spa, a rooftop pool and a gym. The 350,000-square-foot indoor ski facility will offer slopes of up to 300 feet tall and 12,000 feet long. There will also be other recreational offerings.

“The Grand Alps will be a great addition to our well-establisheed tourist business,” said Grand Prairie Mayor Ron Jensen. “Pair that with our new voter-approved and sales-tax funded indoor water park and you’ll be able to swim in the morning and snow ski in the afternoon year-round.”

The city will kick in land, three-year tax increment financing funds for the project’s infrastructure, 100 percent real estate tax abatement for seven years and a 75 percent rebate of hotel motel tax for 10 years after opening. The City Council will vote on the proposal shortly after the announcement later today. According to the company’s website, the ski facility will have seven different slopes and a snowboard park. It will be temperature controlled at 28 degree year-round. The Hard Rock Hotel will be a 300 room, 4-Star hotel with a rooftop pool complex, multiple restaurants, a family entertainment center, a digital movie theater and specialty shops.

The developer expects groundbreaking will occur in the first quarter of 2015, cintingent upon full financinig. The project will take 34 months to construct and is scheduled to open in early 2018.
