UPDATE: Salsa Limón begins moving cafe to River District next week

🕐 1 min read

Put your popcorn away for Friday and Saturday: Rain has delayed the move until Monday

Watch as Salsa Limón “Museo” becomes “Distrito” as the iconic building literally picks up and moves across town to its new River District setting.

A press release noted that the unprecedented move of the gleaming Streamline Moderne café will be a two day process, spearheaded by renowned local Head Contractor H.D. Snow to help ensure that this rare gem of a building is preserved and maintained throughout the moving process.

A 1947 architectural masterpiece, Salsa Limón’s home of four years is one of the only original Streamline Moderne cafes left in southern U.S. It was originally constructed by Jack Corn for its long run as Topsy’s Cafe. Over the years, the building has also been the home of J&J’s Oyster Bar, Rush Street, and Quizno’s Sub.

On Friday October 14, it will be picked up on a flatbed truck and transferred to its permanent location in the newly-developing River District. When it arrives at it will be re-named Distrito (Spanish for District).

Not only will the new location feature the original 1947 building, but will also include a reflecting pool, chicken coops, and fire pit on the tree-rich, acre sized lot. Distrito’s grand opening is now projected for mid-November.

Salsa Limón’s take on tacos may be rooted in tradition, but they are far from the ordinary fare found in other area taquerias. They serve an authentic lineup of traditional Mexico City street-style favorites with Oaxacan-influence. Craving their freshly made, light and fluffy red Spanish rice and sizzling tacos topped with Oaxacan inspired crunchy cabbage mix, or warm and buttery quesadillas, Salsa Limón’s fans will follow them anywhere.
