The more they can see, the more police can help.

The city council at its Nov. 6 meeting authorized an agreement with Axon Enterprise Inc. for $1.2 million to buy in-car video, interview room and related equipment and services for the Fort Worth Police Department.

The agreement includes two one-year options to renew.

The department asked for video capabilities for interview rooms, along with continuing its agreement for in-car video systems. The interview room camera systems include the cameras, accessories, mounting and docking station, software interface and maintenance.

The interview room and in-car video systems can capture evidence, which is then stored on Evidence.com, an online video storage solution owned by Axon Enterprise Inc. This protects the video evidence from tampering and catalogs each event for retrieval and management.

These devices and applications will connect with the city’s computer-aided dispatch and records management systems.

“We have found the increased number of cameras helps us catch criminals and keep them off the street,” Councilman Brian Byrd said, referring to the increase of street cameras throughout the city.

He added, “By increasing transparency, it helps all officers. For example, no one can blame our police officers for something they didn’t do if the evidence is right there on video.”
