The Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) has named Christie Eckler as its new vice president of advancement. Eckler brings more than 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector to BRIT’s newly named Advancement Department, where she will oversee development, fundraising, membership, and marketing programs, and help to guide the Institute into its next phase of growth.
Most recently, Eckler served as development director for UTA’s College of Science. Prior to her foray into the university setting, Eckler had been involved in the philanthropic side of social service. In the last ten years, she has raised more than $20 million federally and privately for some of the most vulnerable populations in our community. She has served as vice president of Development for Samaritan House, as well as program manager for Asset Development at Catholic Charities of Fort Worth, and director of Housing for SafeHaven of Tarrant County.
“I am excited to welcome Christie as the new Vice President of Advancement,” said Ed Schneider, BRIT’s executive director. “She brings an excellent strategic approach to building awareness and building support from our varied constituents and will play a valuable role in advancing BRIT’s mission. In addition, her ability to truly live her life’s motto of helping those who help others is inspirational.”
Eckler is excited about her new position.
“I look forward to working with BRIT’s incredible management team while leading the Institute’s public engagement and development efforts,” she said. “It’s humbling to be part of this institution with its renowned research and education staff who are focused on conservation and knowledge sharing.”
Eckler received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree of science in social work with a concentration in community administrative practice from UT Arlington. She’s a licensed master social worker (LMSW) and certified fund-raising executive (CFRE). For the past seven years, she has taught as an adjunct faculty member at UT Arlington with a principal focus on graduate courses in macro practice in the School of Social Work.
In addition, Eckler has served on numerous non-profit boards, committees, and taskforces. She is active in a number of professional organizations including Women Steering Business, Women’s Policy Forum, and downtown Fort Worth Rotary Club.
BRIT’s search for a new head of development began in July 2018 after long-time vice president of Development Cleve Lancaster announced his retirement. The selection was made after an exhaustive national search and selection process.
