Lockheed seeks voluntary layoffs of 1,000 across U.S.

Lockheed Martin Corp.’s aeronautics business announced March 8 it plans to reduce about 1,000 positions in the United States through a voluntary layoff program.

The voluntary program is available to mid-level employee groups in Fort Worth; Marietta, Georgia; Palmdale, California; Meridian, Mississippi; Clarksburg, West Virginia; Patuxent River, Maryland; and Edwards Air Force Base, California.

In a news release, Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed said the “action is necessary to position Lockheed Martin Aeronautics to be competitive in the future marketplace, secure future business opportunities, and keep an infrastructure appropriately aligned with customer demands.”

As of Dec. 31, 2015, Lockheed had 126,000 employees worldwide.
