DALLAS (AP) – American Airlines is releasing more details about changes that will reward its highest-paying passengers, not just those who fly the most miles.
American announced Monday that beginning in August, passengers will earn points based on the price of their ticket. Elite-status members of the AAdvantage loyalty program will earn even more points per dollar spent.
To earn elite status, customers will have to rack up points, but also spend $3,000 or more annually starting next year.
American signaled in October that changes were coming, but gave few details.
The changes bring American in line with Delta, United and others that base rewards on spending. The new structure benefits business travelers and others who buy expensive tickets, but works against those who buy the cheapest ticket they can find.
