Get ready, Fort Worth: the Chisholm Trail Parkway toll road is scheduled to open to traffic in May, creating a 27.6-mile conduit from Cowtown’s business district south to U.S. 67 in Cleburne.
“It’s been 50 years in the making and soon the Chisholm Trail Parkway will be a reality, the NTTA’s first roadway in Tarrant County,” said Kenneth Barr, North Texas Tollway Authority chairman and former Fort Worth mayor, in a news release.
“The Chisholm Trail Parkway is an important roadway that will alleviate congestion and create more direct routes for those who travel between Fort Worth and Cleburne,” Barr said.
The road is an all-electronic tolling facility with no toll booths. An NTTA TollTag may be used to travel on the tollway and area toll roads. ZipCash users, the NTTA’s pay-by-mail customers, pay 50 percent more for tolls to reflect the higher cost of collection. A new, $20 entry-level TollTag is now available for infrequent users.
The entire $1.4 billion toll road will open on the same day in May; the specific day was not specified. Along with creating a new route through Southwest Fort Worth into Johnson County, the road will provide motorists with an alternative to Interstate 35W.
Construction on the roadway began in April 2010, and was fully under way by December 2011. The Texas Department of Transportation, a project partner, constructed an access improvement at the Interstate-20/State Highway 183 interchanges with the new CTP.
