CORSICANA, Texas (AP) – An eight-mile stretch of Interstate 45 in Navarro County between Dallas and Houston has been shut because of flooding from heavy overnight storms in Central and North Texas.

Authorities say the highway has been closed south of Corsicana and north of Fairfield after the road was inundated by an overflowing Chambers Creek. The creek empties into the Chambers Richland Reservoir just east of the freeway and is prone to flooding.

The closed highway is about 50 miles south of Dallas.

West and north of Corsicana, the same storm system late Sunday caused street flooding in Mexia, Hillsboro, Ennis and Waco. The National Weather Service said the 2.46 inches of rain in Waco on Sunday set a record for June 12. The previous mark was 2.46 inches in 1987.
