Heavy rains flood Galveston streets on Labor Day

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — Parts of Galveston have gotten more than 10 inches of rain, flooding streets as a storm system moved across the island.

National Weather Service meteorologist Josh Lichter says heavy rains fell on the island overnight Monday and into the morning but lightened by afternoon.

Cars slowly drove through flooded streets as some businesses placed sandbags around their doors in the city about 50 miles southeast of Houston.

Lichter said the rains that fell on Galveston on Monday were part of a disturbance moving westward across the Gulf of Mexico. He said the rains were unrelated to Tropical Storm Gordon, which lashed South Florida on Monday.
