The Fort Worth Transportation Authority plans to use a $554,610 grant from the Texas Department of Transportation’s Transportation Enhancement Program to purchase 10 new bike share stations and 100 bike share bicycles.

The grant — among 81 awarded statewide for projects chosen by the Texas Transportation Commission to receive a total of $91 million in grant funds —must be used for toward capital expenses. Operating expenses spurred by adding the new stations and bicycles will be funded through sponsorships, advertising, memberships and usage fees.

“The additional stations purchased with this grant will go a long way to increase first and last mile connections to existing bus, rail, and bike share options, and we are excited to have a hand in making that happen,” said Tony Johnson, executive vice president and chief operating officer for the authority, or The T, commenting in a news release.

Fort Worth Bike Sharing launched on Earth Day in April with 300 bicycles and 27 stations. Three stations have since been added, bringing the current total to 30. Using remaining FTA funds, Fort Worth B-Cycle will expand by 4-6 stations in September, raising the total number to at least 34. This expansion is separate from the TxDOT grant.
