Pilot unhurt in crash landing in West Texas field in Abilene

ABILENE, Texas (AP) — Officials say a single-engine private plane made a crash landing in a West Texas field shortly after takeoff on a flight to New Mexico.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the pilot reported engine trouble after takeoff Monday from Abilene Regional Airport and was trying to land at nearby Dyess Air Force Base.

Taylor County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cliff Griffin said the pilot wasn’t hurt in the crash landing a mile west of Dyess. Griffin said the plane was bound for Ruidoso, New Mexico.

The Beechcraft A-36 ended up on its belly.
