Southbound I-35W traffic switch begins Tuesday night

🕐 1 min read

Motorists can expect a traffic shift beginning Tuesday night on southbound Interstate 35W from Texas 121 to Spur 280.

The change will allow construction crews to work on ramps at Weatherford Street and Spur 280, which will be closed for about 6 months.

To perform the switch and prepare for construction activities on that stretch of freeway, the following closures will occur from 9 p.m. Tuesday Nov. 8 to 5 a.m. Wednesday Nov. 9:

*  Long-term (about six months) closure of the southbound on-ramp to I-35W from Weatherford and Gilvin streets. Traffic will be redirected to Riverside Drive.

*  Long-term (about six months) closure of the southbound exit ramp to downtown/Spur 280. Traffic will be redirected to Belknap Street.

*   The direct connector from southbound Texas 121 to southbound I-35W. Traffic will be redirected to Hampton Street.

*   The direct connectors from southbound I-35W to eastbound and westbound Interstate 30. Traffic will be redirected to Rosedale Street.

The work is part of the $1.4 billion North Tarrant Express 35W project, which includes a 6.5-mile section currently ranked 23rd on the state’s most congested roadway list. Ranked sixth when construction began in 2013, the portion of I-35W from north of I-30 to north of Loop 820 including the I-35W/I-820 interchange in Fort Worth already seeing traffic improvements with the reconstruction of main lanes and the addition of TEXpress managed lanes.

More information on upcoming closure is available at for upcoming closures. Closures are subject to weather conditions, and construction activities may be postponed if necessary.
